A Healthier Air Fryer Doughnut Hole Recipe

It’s no secret that Americans love doughnuts. These sweet and delicious hoops of pastry are a breakfast favorite and they can be found everywhere from made-to-order doughnut bakeries to gas station convenience stores. Americans eat a whopping 10 billion doughnuts each year, according to the South Florida Reporter. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that we dedicate an entire day, the first Friday in June, to celebrating National Doughnut Day.

Nor is it a surprise that doughnuts aren’t exactly a breakfast of champions. Traditionally, they are deep fried and many varieties are stuffed or topped with frosting or a sugar glaze, making them high in added sugar, processed carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

While doughnuts can be baked to cut back on the amount of fat they contain, that often gives them a more cake-like texture. If you use an air fryer, however, you can have your “fried” doughnut and make it healthier, too. Air fryers cook things using convection heat, so they get crispy outside, and stay soft inside, using less fat that deep frying. And you can take full charge of the type of oil you use. Vegetable or avocado oil lends a small amount of healthy fats to your doughnut.

You can also use whole-wheat flour in place of almost half of the all-purpose flour to add B vitamins and fiber, a nutrient which most Americans fall short on, according to Harvard Health Publishing. This air fryer doughnut hole recipe is even diabetes-friendly and can easily be made vegan (see the tip below).

This recipe is for doughnut holes, because it’s easier to stop at a reasonable portion of these small treats — six have less than 80 calories and just over 1 gram of fat — while still enjoying the doughnut flavor you love. They’re also perfect for sharing with your friends and family. What’s a better way to celebrate all things doughnut than that?
